ROGER FISHBITE: Nymphets in Catholic School Uniforms

Here's part of The Amazon Review for Emily Prager's Roger Fishbite: Lucky Linderhof, a 12-year-old latter-day Lolita born of the privileged sperm club, lives in New York with her affectionate but ineffectual mother, a woman who changes her lovers as quickly as she changes her designer clothes. Abandoned by her father, Lucky seeks a symbolic replacement among her mother's boyfriends--but when the piranha lodger Roger Fishbite moves in, she ends up with a father figure who becomes a lover.

The Author Note in the novel states: This novel is in part a literary parody of that great work Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. It is my reply both to the book and the icon that the character Lolita has become.

Prager may have given an appropriate example of an ephebophile in the novel. She wrote, "No, this man [ephebophile] is a special man, a man for whom a Catholic school uniform, even on a mannequin, does more than a whole album of grown-up nudes." Thatmay be an hyperbole, but it's closer than further from the truth.

Roger may have non-verbally expressed his attraction for Lucky, but she made the first physical move when she, "... leaped up and kissed him squareon the mouth." She kissed him for dresses, gave him hugs for CDs, and performed oral sex for jewelry. However, Lucky repeatedly teased Roger when he wanted to make love. "Lose my virginity to you? What's in it for me?" Lucky asked. But when Lucky read in Roger's journal that he made love to Evie a, "...hot as a pistol," 11-year-old model, who he was shocked wasn't a virgin, Lucky was livid with jealousy and took matters into her own hands.

Plot Summary for Katie: Roger, a frustrated New York City public high school teacher and member of Manhattan’s underground pickup artist community, abandons his traditional economics curriculum to teach the art of seduction. With such enticing new material, perhaps his underprivileged students will be more engaged in class, and thereby better behaved. However, when Roger gets into an argument on the subway with the powerful Mr. Miller, who becomes so upset that he sets out to destroy Roger’s teaching career, Roger reluctantly decides to seduce Katie, Mr. Miller’s beautiful teenage daughter, to get revenge. Little does Roger know that this seduction will have a lasting effect on his life, and the lives of his students.

Nymphet Brooke Shields @ the MoMA

I recently found this photograph on my computer. I quickly snapped it at the Talk to Me exhibit at the MoMA almost two years ago. I was at the beginning stages of writing The Allure of Nymphets and I remember being shocked by the photograph for a variety of reasons. The obvious reason being that it's a photograph of a half-naked 10-year-old BrookeShields posing seductively, but the other reason was that the photograph was out of context - it appeared to have nothing to do with the theme of the exhibit, which was about how, "... openly and actively or in subtle, subliminal ways, things talk to us."

Famous Ephebophile: Ernest Hemingway

I wrote about the poetry of Charles Bukowski in The Allure of Nymphets. I specifically shared a poem that he wrote about Ernest Hemingway who, like a number of artists that I wrote about in the book, was clearly an ephebophile.

In a clean, well-lighted place by Charles Bukowski

the old fart [Ernest Hemingway]. he used his literary reputation\to reel them in one at a time,\
each younger than the last.\he liked to meet them for luncheon and\wine\and he’d talk and listen to them\talk.\whatever wife or girlfriend he had at the moment\was made to\understand that this sort of thing made him\“young again.”\the young ladies vied to bed down with\this\literary\
genius.\in between, he continued to write,\and late at night in his favorite bar\liked to talk about writing and his amorous\adventures.\actually, he was just a drunk\who liked young ladies,\writing itself,\and talking about writing.\wasn’t a bad life.

There are a number of things we can learn from this poem:

Hemingway used the Indirect approach of seduction, which is to initiate a conversation with a nymphet without letting her know your true intention. For example, Hemingway invited the nymphets to lunch to discuss literature after which they  "vied to bed down" the literary genius.

Hemingway's wives/girlfriends approved ofhis affairs with nymphets. He used the excuse thatnymphets made him feel "young again", but that is exactly what that was - alame excuse. Hemingway, like most men, was too shy to say that he was simply attracted to nymphets.

Clearly, Hemingway's nymphets were not deterred by his grey, his age or the fact that he was married, which isn't surprising after reading R. Don Steele's How to Date Young Women for Men Over 35.

Famous Ephebophiles: Peter Cook and Ashton Kutcher

I wrote in The Allure of Nymphets about Ridley's findings in The Red Queenthat men are attracted to a trinity of qualities: youth, figure, and face. And that even if a middle-aged woman has the face and the figure, she will not be as attractive as a nymphet, which may explain why Peter Cook had an affair with 18-year-old Diana Bianchi while he was married to 54-year-old former supermodel Christie Brinkley, who has clearly maintained her figure and face. And Ashton Kutcher had an affair with 19-year-old Sara Leal while he was married to 48-year-old Demi Moore, who just like Christie, with the help of plastic surgery, has maintained her figure and the face.

THE MONK and the Nymphet(s)

The Monk (French: Le moine) is an ironic example of "What To Do" and "What Not To Do" to seduce a nymphet. Counterintuitively, the piety of a monk is extremely attractive to a nymphet. For example, in Mickey Royal's The Pimp Game, he relates, extremely counterintuitively, that for one to be a pimp he must give up desires of the flesh i.e. materialism, lust, etc. (More on this fascinating point in an upcoming post and soon to be book.)

The monk (Vincent Cassel) is very religious. He initially rejects the advances of a nymphet who sneaks into the monastery to seduce him; however, after she drugs him and takes his virginity, his inhibitions are released and he aggressively pursues the nymphet in the screenshot below. Unsurprisingly, she rejects his advances, and unfortunately he makes the ULTIMATE sacrifice to "be with her".

The take aways from this film is that neediness is unattractive. (Royal even advises that one should not approach the opposite sex, but be "open" (i.e. have no desires of the flesh) and let nymphets come to you.)And, believe it or not, piety (i.e. having the self-control/self-discipline to avoid the immoral aspects of life) is attractive. Lastly, having a monk-like beard isn't a bad idea

Mathilda (Natalie Portman) - Nymphet Prostitute

The award winning non-fiction writer Rich Cohen wrote in a Vanity Fair article about his effort to ghost write a book about Theodore Forstmann, "Writing a nonfiction story is like cracking a safe. It seems impossible at the beginning, but once your're in, you're in." That is exactly what I experienced while writing The Allure of Nymphets. Despite the fact that the book has been published, I'm still pulling pulling jewels out of the safe for this blog.

For example, on my plane ride back into New York City on Monday, a young lady two rows up was watching Leon(1994) on her humongous silver MacBook. I left Leon out of the appendix of The Allure of Nymphets, because the relationship between the nymphet Mathilda (13-year-old Natalie Portman) and Leon (46-year-old Jean Reno) had some sexual overtones, but was for the most part platonic. But what I forgot was that Mathilda was a teen prostitute and in the opening scene she serviced (off-screen) a middle-aged john.

"Childhood" in New York City

$

This week's New York magazine has a cover story on Childhood in New York. This excerpt from the article, Little Grown-ups and Their Progeny by Jennifer Senior, is consistent with the research that I related in The Allure of Nymphets about childhood being a relatively recent invention.

The article relates that up until the end of the WWII, children were expected to contribute to the family financially. Particular to New York City, newsboys were rampant, but delivering newspapers wasn’t their only source of income. They, “…blacked boots, scavenged for junk, and shuttled messages and goods.” But, “...child poverty, child abuse, and exploitative labor practices…” lead to an effort by reformers and the government (e.g. Children’s Bureau) to protect children.

However, Steven Mintz, the author of Huck’s Raft: A History of Childhood in America, said, “They [reformers and the government] viewed kids smoking at 10 and 12 and having independent money and walking into bars as the worst thing in the world. It reminds you that "child" is a label, not a reality.

Clearly, prior to the end the WWII and before the American economy prospered, young people (i.e. children) were expected to behave as adults in terms of earning a living wage and their adult behavior in terms of vices was condoned. It was even common to see 10-year-old prostitutes in New York City.

Just like Neil Postman related in The Disappearance of Childhood, things have gone full circle. Today, children/teens behave just like adults. For example, they drink, smoke, take drugs, have sex, are (virtual) teen strippers etc; however, what separates them from adults isn't the printing press, but age-of-consent laws.

Actresses Playing Nude Early-Teens

The Savior (1971) French: Le sauveur is generally about14-year-old Nanette (Muriel Catalá) who falls in love with a middle-aged man who she finds injured near her family's farm in rural France. If I would have known that Muriel Catalá was 18-years-old when the film was made, I wouldn't have been as shocked by the nude nymphet scenes, becauseMuriel easily passes for a 14-year-old. But that raises the question, is it okay for "older" actresses to play raunchy early-teen roles?

I wrote in The Allure of Nymphets about the photographs in the November 2010 issue of GQ magazine that featured three stars of the Fox teen musical Glee. The Parents Television Council released a report saying that the GQ photographs sexualized actresses that play high school-aged students, bordered on pedophilia, and was nearly pornographic. GQ responded by saying that there was nothing wrong with the photographsdue to the nature of sexualized modern television, andthat the actresses were in their twenties. But is that a valid excuse? Where do we draw the line?

In Woody Allen's Husbands and Wives (1992), Columbia literature professor Gabe Roth (Woody Allen) begins an affair with one of his young students, Rain (Juliette Lewis), after she reads and praises the manuscript of his new novel. However, prior to taking Roth’s class, Rain had previous relationships with three [much] older men. Now that's a young lady that's into to her age-discrepant relationships!

MAD MEN: Betty Offers to Help Husband Rape Nymphet

On last weeks much anticipated season premier of Mad Men, in an effort to "...spice things up..." in their love life, Mrs. Betty Davis offered to help her husband rape a 15-year-old nymphet. And you thought the wife of Emperor Augustus, the first emperor of the Roman Empire, was helpful. Like I mentioned in The Allure of Nymphets, the Emperor's wife procured very young virgins for the Emperor to satisfy his passion for deflowering nymphets. I'm surprised that their hasn't been any backlash. Especially, since rapper Rick Ross lost his endorsement with Addidas this week after he made a rape song that condoned rape.

A Nymphet's Unrequited Love for her Ballet Teacher

Collusion: Memoir of a Young Girl and Her Ballet Master is Evan Zimroth's memoir about her unrequited love affair with, F., her middle-aged ballet instructor that began when she was 12-year-old. She wrote,"I wish I could know now, at this moment, whether the relationship was erotic for F., too."

Not only was F's unrequited love attractive to Evan, but the fact that "... his attention could always be withdrawn, that there was always someone else waiting to claim it - someone younger, thinner, more beautiful ..." caused her to be deeply in love with him.

I can't find my copy of How to Date Young Women for Men Over 35; therefore, I'm going to paraphrase R. Don Steele who reiterated what Evan wrote about her ballet instructor. Steele wrote that an ephebophile's attitude should be that he has the ability to tap into an almost unlimited amount of "young pearls"; thus, he has no need to be needy i.e. too nice, unnecessarily accommodating, etc.

F's aloofness was so strong that Evan wished that F. would have risked going to jail for pedophilia. She wrote, "F. never quite took that risk, although I imagined for years that he might. I wished for it."

F was unneedy to the point that when he did anything for Evan, which included hitting her with a cane, Evan felt that F. was giving her a gift, which made her want to give him a gift in return. She wrote, "... I felt thoroughly in love with him, as if he had showered me with gifts and I could reciprocate, give him gifts in return..."

Nymphet Knee and Ankle Fetish

In The Allure of Nymphets, I shared the poem “man mowing the lawn across the way from me” by Charles Bukowski. He wrote:

man mowing the lawn across from me\don’t you see the young girls walking down the sidewalks now\with knives in their purses? \don’t you see their beautiful eyes and dresses and\hair? \don’t you see their beautiful asses and knees and \ankles?

Bukowski couldn't fathom why the man wasn't infatuated by the knees and ankles of the passing nymphets. But Bukowski isn't the only one with a nymphet knee and ankle fetish.
Jérôme, the 35-year-old protagonist in the french film Claire's Knee(1970) [French: Le genou de Claire], "is struck by teenage girl Claire and harbours an unquenchable desire to touch her knee." (IMDB).

And the book covers for the books pictured below, which are all about nymphets who are involved in age-discrepant relationships, were clearly chosen by a publishing company that was aware of the seductive nature of the knees and ankles of nymphets. Could that also  be the reason why men find catholic school girl uniforms so inviting?

GOSSIP GIRL: How to Blackmail a Nymphet?

I wrote in The Allure of Nymphets about how age-discrepant relationships between students and [English] teachers on teen television shows are usually portrayed in one or maybe two episodes; however, that wasn't the case with Gossip Girl.  The age-discrepant relationships between the sexually aggressive nymphet Serena (Blake Lively) and her various mentors, teachers and professors extended across the six seasons of the show that was called, “Mind-blowingly inappropriate.” by the Parents Television Council, “Very bad for you." by the San Diego Union-Tribune, and “A nasty piece of work.” by the New York Post.

In the Gossip Girl clip below, Blair (Leighton Meester) blackmailed representatives from the five most powerful private high schools in Manhattan into attending her fashion show to give it some credence. And what did she blackmail the girls from Constance Billard School for Girls, Dobbs, The Brearley School, Chapin, and The Spence School with to comply with her demand. She threatened to have a representative from The Nightingale-Bamford School, “… reveal your affair with your drama teacher. Your Latin teacher. Your father’s business partner.” It appears that the Boston Herald was correct in calling the show “Every parent’s nightmare.”

Famous Ephebophile: Henry Miller

Thus far, I've read three of Henry Miller's books, and each book had characters who were involved in age-discrepant relationships:

In Tropic of Capricorn Miller had an "encounter"with a beautiful sixteen or seventeen-year-old “Jewess”. And Miller got his sixteen-year-old piano student pregnant.

In Tropic of Cancer, Miller wrote about aspiring writer Van Norden who lured young virgins into his room with his poetry before taking their virginity. Also, Fillmore was introduced to a Russian nymphet by his boss who had impregnated the girl's sixteen-year-old friend.

In Sexus, Miller learned that Mona, his young future fiancée “…had her hymen broken at the age of fifteen,” for $1,000 by a man who allegedly had a fetish for deflowering young virgins. And Dr. Onirifick's jealous wife threatened to report him to the district attorney for being, "... after that twelve-year-old niece of his ..."

Japanese High School Nymphet Prostitutes

In an earlier post about the documentary Girl Model (2012) and in The Allure of Nymphets, I wrote about how, like the French and the Spanish, yet unlike North Americans and the British,  the Japanese are open about their attraction to nymphets or what it is referred to in Japan as Lolicon (ロリコン) i.e. "Lolita complex". However, in the post and in the book, I only touched the tip of the iceberg on the Japanese's allure of nymphets.

A 1997 New York Times article titled "Schoolgirls as Sex Toys" related:

In Tokyo there are now several hundred ''image clubs,'' where Japanese men pay $150 an hour to act out their fantasies with make-believe schoolgirls in make-believe classrooms, locker rooms or commuter trains. A customer may, for example, act the part of a teacher who walks into a classroom and tears the clothes off a schoolgirl. Or he may choose to fondle a schoolgirl on a crowded commuter train.

But Japanese men are not restricted to "make-believe schoolgirls". Like in Spain, the age-of-consent in Japan 13-years-old; subsequently, there are a number of Japanese high school prostitutes.
For example, a 1996 Wall Street Journal article titled "Japan's New Growth Industry: Schoolgirl Prostitution" related:

Aya, now 15, says she started letting men touch her breasts two years ago for $100. Last October, she says she turned her first trick, with a man who approached her and a girlfriend on a Tokyo street and paid them about $500 apiece to have sex with him. She began commuting regularly from her suburban home to ply her body, lured by the cash that she spent on restaurants, miniskirts and trips to Tokyo Disneyland...Japanese teenagers have expensive tastes—$500 Prada purses and $350 Louis Vuitton wallets are hot teen items.

(In a Newsweek article titled "Japan's Dirty Secret: Schoolgirls Selling Sex" the deputy director of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police juvenile division said, “It has to do with a longing for material things. It’s not that they come from poor families who need to support themselves. They just want to have more and more.”)

Aya is part of what Japanese police are starting to call an epidemic: prostitution by schoolgirls. Police say they picked up 5,481 girls under 18 in Japan for prostitution and related activities last year, 38% more than two years earlier.

Shinji Miyadai, a sociologist at Tokyo Metropolitan University, estimates that 8% of schoolgirls nationwide—and one-third of girls at some schools that aren't geared toward the college-bound—are involved in the sex industry.

Teen prostitution is particularly rife in Tokyo, where it is legal for adults to have sex with children over 12 and where prostitution isn't punishable unless arranged by a pimp. Tokyo police grumble that when they spot an older man and a young girl emerging from ubiquitous "love hotels," which rent rooms by the hour, all they can do is take names and ages and notify the girl's parents.

Don't be a feminist and blame the Japanese high school prostitute epidemic on "dirty old men". It's a two-way street. The high school prostitutes can be very aggressive in their pursuit of middle-aged johns. For example, the Wall Street Journal article further related :

Melon Club.. features a tiny one-way mirror looking in on a main room where girls wait...it looks like a slumber party: Six girls lounge on sofas, playing video games, putting on lipstick and reading comics...Splayed on the floor are the girls' Prada and Fendi bags.

Girls drift into the club and wait to be chosen by customers who pay $100, $50 of which goes to the girl, then go on a one-hour "date." Many girls say they give out their portable phone numbers and begin freelancing. One, who gives her name as Miki, says she can earn $150 to $200 a day at the club, whereas she would earn only $7 an hour dishing out ice cream.

Keiko S., 16, began calling a telephone club in elementary school. Now, she earns $800 to $1,000 a month from Melon and her freelancing. She has gone out with about 50 men who range in age from 20 to 60.

Now some girls bypass the clubs entirely, posting their cellular-phone and beeper numbers along Tokyo streets. Juvenile-police director Mr. Nishida, 58, says he has been solicited by schoolgirls while walking Tokyo's streets in plain clothes. Shopping arcades have begun posting signs ordering, "Do not write your phone or beeper number."

According to the article, it turns out that the high school prostitutes don't consider what they do to be prostitution:

The girls call their customers "Papasan" and don't speak of prostitution—to them it is just enjo kosai, or financially supported dating. Akiyoshi Ishibashi, a police psychologist in Tokyo, says half of the 400 teenage prostitutes he and other Tokyo psychologists have counseled extensively—most from middle-class families with two parents—don't feel prostitution is wrong.

Lolicon (ロリコン) and enjo kosai (援助交際) aren't kept secret in Japan. They're portrayed on mainstream television shows, movies, and anime. (Search Youtube and Google the Japanese characters to get examples.). The BBC even featured enjo kosai  in a documentary.

BBC Sex in Japan clip on Enjo Kosai
The full documentary can be seen here.

The plot summary for the movie series Stop the Bitch Campaign is:

In Tokyo, prostitution in the name of "Enjo Kosai" is in fashion among some high school girls. A mysterious man, Kuni, laments such girls, but cannot deny a strong desire for them. He punishes the girls by having sex with them without paying. He calls this operation "Stop the Bitch Campaign" for public justice.

JT Brown shared this information in an article he wrote on Hackwriter about enjo kosai:

Internet match-making services exist in many countries. But they don’t quite shape up like this one [Japan]. Read the following quotations and facts found in a English language report on virtual dating sites, compiled and written this year by Japan’s National Police Agency.

Some typical messages posted in solicitation of sex, (by males):

"Will pay 50,000 yen maximum for Enjo Kosai."
"Awaiting messages from high school girls short in pocket money."

by females):
"Send me a mail if you can meet me Sunday for 30,000 yen."
"Buy my virginity. I’m an innocent 15 year old."
"I want to try real sex! I’m bored with playing with myself. Somebody with lots of money please make me feel good."

Some facts found in the report:
"93.8% cases of which the solicitation method is known, were initiated by female child."
"97 percent of cases with child prostitutes now involve cell phone dating services."
"83.1% of high school students, 23.1% of junior high own cellular phones"

I'm not sure what the current laws are in Japan concerning enjo kosai. There has been some legislation introduced concerning The Child Prostitution and Pornography Act and the Child Welfare Law, but I've read conflicting reports from a number of different sources. But JT Brown wrote that, "...enforcement of the laws on the books by Japan’s finest has always been a joke anyway."

I related in The Allure of Nymphets about pre-teen prostitutes in the United States prior to the change in the age-of-consent laws and the rise of teen prostitutes after the age-of-consent was raised. Here's an excerpt from The Allure of Nymphets:

To give an example of how raunchy things got, Odem [author of Delinquent Daughters] related that during World War I, when the problem of female sexual delinquency assumed national proportions...a five-mile radius moral zone was implemented around military training camps. In those moral zones, alcohol and prostitution were prohibited. Surprisingly, the military discovered that it was not professional prostitutes who were loitering around military bases - it was teenage girls. Over the course of the war, approximately 30,000 young girls were apprehended for illicit activity, prostitution and suspicion of spreading venereal diseases.

You may not see any teen prostitutes on the streets in the United States anymore; however, you'll find a plethora of virtual teen prostitutes on the Internet where they'll do just about anything under the sun for virtual "tokens". If you don't believe me, at your own risk, Google "girls on stickcam". (The site is NSFW and the owners of the blog assures that all the girls are at least 18-years-old.)

Famous Teleiophile: Holiday Golightly

I wrote in The Allure of Nymphets that in Truman Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany’s Holiday Golightly married a much older man at the age of thirteen, she lived with a college jock at the age of fifteen, and at the age of eighteen stated,“I can’t get excited by a man until he’s at least forty-two.” Now that's a teleiophile (i.e. a young women are immensely attracted to older men.)

Always Ask A Nymphet Her Age

Just like in a number of novels, movies and television shows (e.g.  Life UnexpectedBored to Death, etc.) Jiri (Georges Corraface), the 40-year-old protagonist in Love, Math and Sex (1997) [French: C'est la tangente que je préfère], didn't realize that his love interest, Sabine (Julie Delarme), was underage until they had sex.

For obvious reasons, one should never have a sexual relationship with an underage girl. Illegal relationships are usually exposed by a jealous boyfriend, female friend or parent; however, occasionally the nymphet will expose the relationship to the proper authorities if she feels spurned or if the love is unrequited. Unsurprisingly, Jiri was unable to cease the affair after having a taste of the nymphet. Surprisingly, Jiri, unlike a lot of ephebophiles, realized the importance of letting the nymphet determine how quickly the relationship should advance.

Jiri said, "I don't want you to vanish again. I wanted to go too fast - like a kid tugging a plant to make it grow faster. I should have been patient and waited for you to love me."

In addition, this movie relates to the post I did on Actresses Playing Nude Early-Teens, because Julie Delarme was 18-years-old when Love, Sex and Math was filmed, but she played a nude 14-year-old nymphet who had sex multiple times with a middle-aged man.

MARGARET (2011): High School Nymphet Performs Oral Sex on Teacher

$

I wrote in The Allure of Nymphets that nymphets do not want to be treated like children and they do not want ephebophiles to act like children. For example, in the film Margaret (2011), high school student Lisa (Anna Paquin) went to visit Mr. Aaron (Matt Damon), her high school teacher, at his Manhattan sublet to get advice, because she, "... didn't have anyone else to talk to." However, Mr. Aaron became distraught after Lisa performed oral sex on him, but Lisa was unsympathetic. She said, “Don’t worry. I’m not going to tell anybody. If that’s what you’re worried about. I totally initiated the whole thing. Anyway it’s just sex. You’re acting like a little kid. I’ll see you in [high] school.” The portrayal of Lisa as a sexually aggressive high school student is an accurate one; thus, Mr. Aaron should have been just as aggressive in rejecting her advances.
